PSU Bicknell Rehearsal Hall

Educational

Pittsburg, Kansas

Brief Summary

Pittsburg State University had long dreamed of having an expanded, sound-appropriate rehearsal space for band, choir, and additional performance groups. A performer’s ability to prepare and rehearse is important in this type of space, which means the building materials used must help keep sound true to the ear of the performer, while also soundproofing the room. Crossland Construction was honored to bring this space to life for PSU.

A 3,600 square foot area was designed to provide a space for performance groups to rehearse without disturbing other performers or classes. Crossland shelled out the area within the building, then added walls to construct the desired space. Electrical components and an HVAC system were also added. A lot of glass was used, which fosters a nice, open feel within the space, but poses a problem with sound. To help with that issue, a sound absorbing curtain was installed, as well as sound diffusing panels.

School was in session while construction was underway, so topline safety measures were extremely important. Additionally, crews had to factor noise limitations into their schedule – especially loud tasks had to wait until the building was not in use. In the event of scheduled evening performances as well, crews did not work the entire day. With careful planning and consistent crew communication, our schedule was planned around these events and the Bicknell Rehearsal Hall was completed on time.

A 3,600 square foot area was designed for performers to rehearse without disturbing other performers or classes. Elegant glass was used in the redesign to foster a nice, open feel within the space. To help with the sound issue glass can create, a sound absorbing curtain and sound diffusing panels were installed.
