Pittsburg High School Renovation and Additions
Safer, greatly improved high school facilities
Pittsburg, KS
Bond issues are an important way for public schools to improve aging and outdated buildings, and Pittsburg High School was no exception. After Pittsburg voters supported their school community by passing a $31 million bond issue to renovate all district schools, Crossland was honored to be selected to build high-quality facilities for Pittsburg students.
The 64,177 square foot renovation included updates to the foreign language classrooms, main corridor, culinary arts, and fine arts classrooms, library/media center, science rooms, and student services/nursing area. Long-needed facilities for special education were added, and a greatly improved performing arts area will enable students to excel in and expand their talents.
Two new areas were also added, totaling 23,089 square feet. One addition included administration offices and a band room. The second added a kitchen and cafeteria, which doubles as a new tornado shelter for the school. New fire alarms and sprinkler systems were also added throughout.
The tornado shelter features massive foundations and heavy precast panel walls, provided by Crossland Prefab and installed by Crossland steel crews. The use of these teams enabled the project to progress at a steady pace, which helped keep it within the tight time frame.
Safety is the top priority with any school construction project. PHS was fully functional during renovation, with 900+ students and staff in the building, so work done to connect new additions to occupied school areas was done cautiously and with consideration to the noise level.
At times, existing portions of the building had to be exposed to weather during the wettest summer in recent history. However, Crossland crews pushed through to complete this important project on time and within budget, meeting the needs of the Pittsburg High School staff and students.
