Hope City Church Addition
Always Room for More Hope
Joplin, MO
The name for Hope City Church in Joplin, Missouri, came from a time when the city needed just that. Hope.
The church got its start shortly after the 2011 Joplin tornado, and the idea for the name came from the impromptu, unofficial renaming of Joplin High School to “Hope High School.”
The church grew quickly after opening, mostly due to its inspiring message and the city’s mission to rebuild. That growth led to a need for more space.
In August 2023, Crossland completed a 30,000 SF expansion project at the church. The $8.4 million project doubled the size of the existing facility, adding more room for worship and a new children’s area.
The exterior featured metal panels with a Corten fireplace. Corten steel is a material that uses a rust coating to prevent further rusting and remains beautiful for years.
Interior finishes were exposed painted ceilings, look-through fireplace, and other standard finishes. We also added Skudo, a protective layer, to the exposed concrete floors to protect them from damage, and once uncovered, we used a machine daily to keep the floors clean.
Crossland donated $35,000 to the church towards a design feature involving roof joists in the elevated walkway.
The only significant challenge was that our erection subcontractor faced delays, which prompted the Crossland team to utilize our own crews to ensure the project remained on schedule. This highlights the value of working with contractors who can self-perform aspects of a project if necessary to maintain project momentum.
