Freeman MOB
Freeman Hospital, Building for the Future
Joplin, MO
In the words of its CEO Paula Baker, Freeman Health Systems is “keeping pace with the future” with its new medical office building in Joplin, Missouri.
This 30,000 SF facility positions Freeman and its doctors to provide the highest quality modern medical care for its patients. The new facility houses offices for physicians specializing in neurosurgery, urology, and dermatology service lines and departments.
The three-story building includes procedure rooms, a clinical laboratory, x-ray services, and two fast-moving elevators, among other features. It is a gorgeous, state-of-the-art facility that will improve and enhance medical care in the Four States region.
The “Wow Factor”
There are “wow factors” all throughout this facility.
Exterior finishes include architectural metal panels that match the brick facade. There is a large window system allowing natural light into the building and a unique sky bridge that connects the facility with the adjacent Freeman Cornell-Beshore Cancer Institute.
Other exterior amenities include a canopied entryway for easy access for patients during appointments and a large stem wall that separates the upper parking lot from the drive lane down into the basement parking garage.
Interior features include metal-shrouded columns based with solid surface material that matches the rest of the building. All of the millwork is premium grade, and there is a mix of solid surface countertops and granite countertops. The facility also features hospital-grade LVT that’s made to look like terrazzo.
Difficult Earthwork Conditions
Going back to the beginning … we had to cut into a hill. A large hill. A 20-foot-tall hill.
The facility’s basement level and first-floor hallway are underground, which required Crossland to cut into a large hillside. Shoring up the soil and ensuring a solid foundation were crucial steps in the construction process. Our crew faced very difficult and dangerous conditions when working underground to construct the basement stem wall, and they handled it with patience and professionalism.
Overcoming Challenges
This project came with its fair share of surprises and challenges, but our team tackled each one with a can-do attitude! Midway through, we got the request that an X-ray room was being added to the scope. The project team adjusted the schedule and made it happen.
We also collaborated with the City of Joplin to create a clever underground water storage system. When a big storm hits, this system collects and releases the water gradually, preventing street flooding.
A Job Well Done
There are many twists and turns in a project like this, but our project team handled them with the utmost dedication.
In the end, Freeman’s leaders can proudly say, “This new, modern building gives our physicians the room they need to care for patients to the highest standard.”
