Fantastic Caverns is a ride-thru cave in the Ozark hills of Springfield, MO, about five miles off historic Route 66. The popular tourist destination hired Crossland to build a new entrance, plus five acres of additional parking, ADA compliant sidewalks, and a welcome pavilion where visitors can wait to catch the next tram or enjoy a picnic lunch. The Phenix Marble Company, near Fantastic Caverns, provided the stone for the entry gate, retaining walls, and pavilion. They mine their stone from the same limestone deposit that houses Fantastic Caverns. The project also included quite a bit of new landscaping and an overlook area above the cave. This required crews to work closely with the engineer to raise grades and redesign light poles to reduce the risk of rock breaking over the cave. Aluminum and metal handrails were also installed for visitor safety. The project was successful and a rewarding opportunity to improve an iconic destination.
