Alpena Wastewater System Improvements
Alpena, AR
The scope of this project included constructing a new 60 KGD wastewater treatment facility for the town of Alpena, Arkansas. The Town had previously employed a septic system, and they embarked on this project to treat all wastewater centrally. The project consisted of a headworks structure, bio treatment unit, drying beds, site pump station, cascade aerator, operations building housing filters, UV disinfection, and chemical feed equipment.
From the hard bid results, the Town knew they were over budget. CHC performed a value engineering effort and proposed various options, which the Town of Alpena accepted to bring this project into their budget. One of our Value Engineering ideas was to use PVC instead of ductile iron for a portion of the site pipe; this saved money and time since ductile iron pipe was subject to long lead times. We also proposed a new location for the cascade aerator in addition to raising its base elevation to eliminate costly rock excavation. Through creativity and collaboration with the project team, we achieved a successful completion for the Town of Alpena, improving their wastewater treatment system, which will make a difference in their community for years to come.
