Celebrating Tad Johnson: 2024 Red Iron Award Winner
| 4 minute read
At this year’s annual Christmas party, Tad Johnson joins the ranks and took home the Red Iron Award—the highest honor we give as a company. This prestigious accolade, named after our founder Ivan Crossland, Sr., celebrates employees who embody grit, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to our core values of trust, responsibility, integrity, and passion.
As Curt Crossland, Executive President and owner so perfectly put it:
“The Red Iron Award represents people who get up every day, put their boots on, and go to work. They may face obstacles, but they stay positive, keep grinding, and elevate the people around them. That’s what my dad stood for, and that’s what this award is all about.”
For those who work with him, it’s no surprise that Tad was chosen for this award.
The Heart of a Leader
Since joining Crossland in 2006, Tad has exemplified what it means to be a leader, mentor, and teammate. Starting as a Project Manager and rising to Division Manager in 2017, Tad’s journey has been exciting and inspiring.
His colleagues describe him as someone who lights up a room, brings positivity wherever he goes, and genuinely cares about others—not just as coworkers, but as people. Whether he’s asking about someone’s kids, chatting about weekend plans, or tackling a tough project, Tad is the kind of leader who lifts up everyone around him.
“Tad’s thoughtful. He’s one of those rare people who genuinely wants to know you inside and outside of work,” a teammate shared. “He doesn’t just solve problems—he makes everyone feel better while doing it.”
Even when faced with challenges, Tad stays cool, calm, and collected—qualities that leave a lasting impression on clients and coworkers alike.
A Legacy of Excellence
Reflecting on his time at Crossland, Tad shared how meaningful this award is to him:
“Looking back at the list of people who’ve won this award before me is humbling. I wasn’t fortunate enough to meet Ivan Sr. but hearing stories about the man he was—it’s an honor to receive an award that represents him.”
Tad’s connection to Crossland runs deep. After starting his career in Kansas City, he and his wife decided to move back home to raise their family. “When I thought of companies to work for, Crossland was the only one I wanted to join,” he said. “Curt Crossland taught me the ropes, and mentored me to become the leader I am today. I’m so thankful for that.”
A Funny Side to Tad
Even great leaders have their quirks, and Tad’s superstitions is well-know. He avoids cracks like his life depends on it—and refuses to clock in or out on an odd number. “He’ll literally wait for the clock to tick over to an even number before punching in,” Nate Kirk, Crossland Project Manager joked.
And while he’s great at leading teams, his golf game still has people talking: “Tad can hit a golf ball farther right than anyone I’ve ever played with,” quipped Chief Billy Friend of Wyandotte Nation.
A Well-Deserved Honor
“Tad, you’re so deserving of this award,” Curt Crossland said. “You’ve grown from a project manager to a division manager, and you’ve done a hell of a job, as Dad would say. I’m very proud of you. Congratulations!”
On behalf of everyone at Crossland, congratulations, Tad, on receiving the 2024 Red Iron Award. Your hard work, dedication, and genuine care for others make you a true embodiment of what this award represents. Thank you for being such an integral part of the Crossland family—we can’t wait to see what you accomplish next!
