The ODOT I-244 Pedestrian & Bike Improvements project joins another important Crossland project, providing access to the Greenwood Rising museum with a 900ft historical memorial trail for pedestrians. The story of Greenwood was one about community, resilience, and history. Crossland Heavy was proud to be a part of a build showcasing these forgotten yet significant moments in history.
Prior to the project, the area was a barren hill supporting I-244. The Crossland Heavy team was tasked with drilling 50 feet into the side of the hill, excavating it down, reinforcing the highway supports, constructing a soil nail wall, and constructing an underground drainage system. Crossland Heavy constructed cast in-place walls to both support the highway and add aesthetic flair to the trail with barnwood stamped concrete. To mitigate the tight site conditions, our team utilized a one-sided form system, which allowed for the hill to be used as a natural backfill. The trail was completed with a brick pathway, lighting, benches, landscaping, and memorial photos, artwork, and informative plaques along the barnwood concrete wall.
The Crossland Heavy team was faced with multiple challenges throughout the project. The worst snow/ice storm on record completely halted construction. Design changes were made including a total redesign of the soil nail wall after construction began. The entire team was dedicated to overcoming these challenges, so they ramped up their communication across the entire project team. They led weekly meetings, daily check-ins, and three project manager meetings per week, and they assessed the schedule every day to ensure they were doing everything in their power to meet the project deadline. They persevered through every challenge to deliver this project on time, displaying Crossland’s ability to step up to a challenge, develop a plan, and work tirelessly until they’ve achieved success.
